Continental Toy Spaniel

About

There are two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel, the Phalene and Papillon. The Phalene variety is among the oldest of the toy spaniels, descending from the Cayenne Dog and the English Toy Spaniels. A favorite of King Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette this breed has some very regal admirers. Older than the Papillon by a few centuries, the Phalene rose to great fame in Belgium after the French Revolution. Eventually the Papillon was introduced and became even more popular, but the adorable Phalene’s fan club has been growing in recent years.
Both types of Continental Toy Spaniel feature the medium length coat on body with feathering and fringes at ears and back of legs. All colors as long as they are on a white background are acceptable in the breed. Where the Papillon ears are oblique and erect, the Phalene’s are drop style. This sweet and lovable dog has a lively personality and is always ready to play. They often excel at agility and obedience and are considered happy, affectionate and easy to train. It’s easy to see why Queen Marie and King Louie had such a thing for these lovely dogs.
