The Floppy Ears variant is associated with ears that fold due to decreased cartilage stiffness. The variant is located in the MSRB3 gene.

Did you know?

The Norwegian Lundehund has the special ability to fold their ears shut at will while still keeping them upright, to protect against cold or wind. Handy when hunting birds in Nordic winters!

How it works

Dogs with zero copies of this variant are more likely to have permanently upright or prick ears, and fully folded ears are more likely with two copies inherited. Please note however that many genetic variants influence ear carriage. Dogs with some cartilage stiffness to their ears can sometimes raise their ears upright when 'at alert' but will flop down when relaxed.

Health implications

Despite the common myth, floppy ears do not cause ear infections, but dogs with floppy ears should have them checked regularly for signs of infection or redness.
